Free public sites
- Everyone sees every message, including your code
- Numbers were used by thousands of people, so apps block them
- No refund, no support
A private temporary number
- Only you see the code
- Fresh mobile numbers that apps accept far more often
- Costs cents and refunds itself if no code arrives in 20 minutes
Verdict
Free sites are fine for curiosity. For an account you want to actually create, a private number saves time and keeps your code to yourself.
